Welcome to the website of St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral, the original cathedral Church of the Diocese of Hamilton.
The present church replaced the original St. Mary’s, a smaller wooden structure, built in 1838. This original church was designated the cathedral church of the newly formed Diocese of Hamilton in 1856 and was destroyed by fire in August, 1859.
With the tremendous efforts of Hamilton’s first Bishop, John Farrell, and the people of the diocese, the cornerstone of the present St. Mary’s was laid in early 1860 and the structure was completed later that year. Most of the work on the building was done by volunteer workers, already employed in the long working days of the era. The results of their labours attest to their dedication, skill, artistry and deep faith.

In Simon the Pharisee’s house, He welcomes the repentant woman. He rebukes the disciples who prevented the children from coming to Him. He welcomes the cries of blind Bartimaeus, when the crowds sought to silence Him. And, quite spectacularly, He welcomes Himself to the home of Zacchaeus, a tax collector despised by many.
